Microplastics have a negative impact on lake ecosystems and their biodiversity

Background

Microplastics have a negative impact on lake ecosystems and their biodiversity. For this reason, the Global Nature Fund and the Lake Constance Foundation have launched the EU-LIFE project “Blue Lakes” in collaboration with the Chiemsee Nature Guides and five Italian partner organizations. In addition to an information campaign for consumers and the development of efficient filter technologies in wastewater treatment plants as well as a standard protocol for sampling and analyzing microplastic residues, dialogue with companies is also part of the project.
