Fair Friday instead of Black Friday: “Fair Wear Works” and “Sport handelt Fair” demand commitment from sports clubs

21. November 2023

Fair Wear Works” and “Sport handelt Fair” are calling on sports clubs to turn “Black Friday” into “Fair Friday” and only discount sustainably produced fan merchandise. FC St. Pauli sets a good example and takes part in Fair Friday. The “Fair Wear Works” project supports sports clubs and regional sports associations in making their textile purchasing more sustainable.

Bonn, 21.11.2023: Fan merchandise, jerseys, sports shoes – behind many of these everyday products in amateur and professional sport lies a long supply chain that has a negative impact on people and nature. On the occasion of the upcoming Black Friday on Friday, November 24, 2023, the “Fair Wear Works” (FWW) project is therefore calling for Fair Friday together with the “Sport handelt Fair” action alliance. All sports clubs are encouraged to discount only sustainably produced fan merchandise on Fair Friday and thus sensitize their fans to the issue of sustainability. “Sports clubs with their large number of members are in an influential position and can promote ecological and social thinking,” says Bettina Faust, project manager at the Global Nature Fund and responsible for FWW. “We are calling on the clubs to use this potential and turn Black Friday into Fair Friday.”

FC St. Pauli as a fair pioneer

FC St. Pauli wants to set a good example by taking part in Fair Friday. The online store will be discounting its range on Fair Friday and offering the opportunity to make donations. As the first and currently only soccer club to be a member of the Fair Wear Foundation, the Hamburg soccer club is a pioneer in terms of sustainable and fair production of all merchandise, from the professional team’s equipment to the skull and crossbones sweater.

“Fair Wear Works” offers assistance with sustainable textile purchasing

According to the Federal Institute for Sports Economics, around 11 billion euros were spent on sportswear and footwear in Germany alone in 2020 – at the same time, for example, less than one percent of all footballs produced worldwide are fairly traded. The “Fair Wear Works” project has therefore set itself the task of raising awareness of the relevance of sustainable textile purchasing and thus also supporting the implementation of the principles of the Federal Environment Ministry’s “Sustainable Sport 2030” position paper. FWW’s needs-oriented services, such as advice on ecological and social risks along global textile supply chains and concrete support with the transition, enable sports clubs and regional sports associations to make the right choice and make an important contribution to promoting ecological and social sustainability in sport. Fair Wear Works is sponsored by ENGAGEMENT GLOBAL gGmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), with the kind support of Fairtrade Germany.

The “Sport acts fair” campaign alliance
The action alliance “Sport handelt Fair” is an association of NGOs, sports clubs, associations and local authorities with currently around 60 members who are actively involved in the topics of sport, fair trade and sustainability throughout Germany. The aim of the alliance is for sport in Germany to play an active role in improving human and labor rights conditions in the sports industry and consumer goods manufacturing.
