Ideas competition: Experience nature barrier-free

23. November 2023

Dr. Thomas Schaefer

Do you represent a nature conservation organization in Germany and are you committed to greater inclusion? Would you like to redesign your services to make them accessible? Until January 30, 2023, private and public nature conservation institutions can apply for concrete support for more accessibility in their offers.

Radolfzell, 23.11.2022: The Global Nature Fund, the German Seminar for Tourism e.V. / Travel for All, National Natural Landscapes e.V. and the consulting office Dr. Kai Pagenkopf invite you to the ideas competition “Experience nature barrier-free” as part of the project “Nature without barriers!”. All private and public nature conservation institutions in Germany that want to open up their nature experience offers to everyone and break down communicative and physical barriers can take part. A total of eight nature conservation institutions throughout Germany will initially be eligible for funding.

We need your specific ideas on how and for whom you want to open up your services. You can win detailed professional advice and €4,000 to turn your idea(s) into reality. The winners will receive detailed advice on the possibilities of making their nature conservation facility accessible and will receive financial support for the implementation of initial measures. All nature conservation facilities that take part in the competition will also receive feedback on the ideas submitted with regard to accessibility on request.

It’s easy to take part: fill in the online form and share your great ideas and suggestions with us! The competition starts on November 23, 2022. The deadline for applications is January 30, 2023.

The possibilities are many and varied: whether preparing for certification in accordance with “Travel for All”, the technical conversion of the website, barrier-free information about the nature experience offered by the facility (e.g. short videos in sign language), optimization of existing nature experience offers through barrier-free design, signage elements or audio guides for circular routes, professional photo shoots for communication, further training for employees or other suggestions – we look forward to receiving your applications!

Background

The topic of barrier-free nature experience in nature conservation and environmental education facilities as well as in public guided tours is still not well established. There are many reasons for this. One is that there is not yet a sufficient range of training courses for the major educational institutions in environmental education. Accordingly, measures for barrier-free nature experiences in many nature conservation facilities in Germany remain the exception rather than the rule. Based on the experience of the last 10 years, the first step, which identifies possible adjustments and measures, is crucial. This first step is to be supported in the “Nature without barriers!” project. The project pursues two main objectives: Conceptualization and implementation of accessibility & nature experience in the relevant educational systems in Germany as well as implementation of concrete measures for inclusive nature experience in nature conservation facilities. The project is sponsored by the German Postcode Lottery and the HAKA Foundation.
