In the Mexican state of Guerrero, 14 percent of the population is indigenous (according to INEGI). The community of Malinaltepec is the most affected by marginalization and the living conditions of the inhabitants are constantly deteriorating due to the overuse of existing resources. The settlements are also at risk of earthquakes and landslides. The former sustainable use of the forest has turned into excessive logging – also for land reclamation for livestock farming. Some tree species are slow to regenerate, which leads to constant disturbance of the forest ecosystem. The consequences are thinned forests, migration of the population to cities and the fragmentation of the social fabric.
In this way, we contribute to the social and ecological resilience of the indigenous communities in the project area to climate change.

Goals
Sustainable management
Develop and implement a plan for sustainable forest management and restoration.
Increase ecological resilience
Increase the social and environmental resilience of indigenous communities in the Sierra de Guerrero to climate impacts.
Resilient development model
Implement a self-determined and ecologically resilient development model in 5 indigenous communities in the agricultural center of Malinaltepec
Improve forest utilization
Improve the ecological sustainability of forest use.
Impacts

7 community mediators and 13 members of the Commissariat for Common Goods have been trained in the sustainable use of resources, networked with other stakeholders and actively impart this knowledge to community members.
Introduction of 50 wood-saving cooking stoves, which reduce the cost of firewood by 30 percent and significantly reduce smoke pollution in households.
Establishment of 4 tree nurseries for reforestation at community level and planting of 2,000 seedlings of native tree species.
