Aluminum Production and Biodiversity
Whether in vehicles, buildings, electrical appliances, or packaging, aluminum is a key raw material for the climate-neutral transition. However, its raw material, bauxite, is primarily mined in tropical and subtropical regions, where it puts pressure on forests, biodiversity, and local communities. This is exactly where we come in. Through our new project, “Diversity Instead of Loss,” we’re helping German companies identify and effectively reduce deforestation and biodiversity risks in their aluminum supply chains.
Here’s what we plan to do:
- Highlighting Risks: We are conducting a publicly accessible, practical materiality analysis on bauxite mining, aluminum production, and biodiversity
- Developing Solutions Together: In collaboration with companies, associations, and experts from industry, academia, and civil society, we develop concrete recommendations for action.
- Promoting transparency: We keep the public informed so that consumers can make informed decisions.
Our project is specifically aimed at the automotive, packaging, construction, electrical, and mechanical engineering industries.
