Aluminum is a key raw material for the transition to a climate-neutral economy. At the same time, the rising demand for primary aluminum is leading to growing demand for bauxite, which is mined primarily in tropical and subtropical regions and poses significant risks to forests, biodiversity, and local communities. Companies in the automotive, packaging, construction, electrical, and mechanical engineering industries, in particular, face the challenge of identifying and addressing these risks throughout their supply chains.

The project helps German companies identify and reduce deforestation and biodiversity risks in global aluminum supply chains. To this end, the Global Nature Fund (GNF) is developing a German-language, practice-oriented materiality analysis with a particular focus on deforestation risks in the aluminum supply chain, as well as practical recommendations for action for the business community.

German companies that process or produce primary aluminum have access to detailed information on deforestation risks in their raw material supply chains—compiled in a materiality analysis using tools such as ENCORE, Global Nature Watch, and the WWF Biodiversity Risk Filter.

Primary aluminum processors and producers have specific, practical recommendations for reducing deforestation risks in raw material procurement, developed in collaboration with companies, associations, and industry experts.
