The project provides information on the value of healthy wetlands and their ecosystem services with the International Wetland Convention as a conceptual framework. We are implementing a comprehensive communication campaign for this purpose. Cities and municipalities are also addressed with the “Wetland Cities” concept.
90% of the wetlands in Germany have been lost in the past 300 years. 80% of wetlands are currently in a poor ecological condition. They play a key role in our environment. We see raising public awareness and acceptance of the need for measures to preserve and sustainably use these ecosystems as an important task. This is exactly what this project is about: it focuses on an important instrument for the protection, conservation and sustainable use of wetlands worldwide – the International Wetlands Convention for the Protection of Wetlands.
The first step is to inform the general public about the value of healthy wetlands and their great economic, social and cultural importance for our livelihoods (ecosystem services). The international wetlands convention serves as a conceptual and communicative bracket. The second work package deals with the “Wetland Cities” concept, which aims to support cities worldwide in the sustainable development and protection of their wetlands.
