Restoring forests and strengthening indigenous self-government, Mexico

Project period: November 2021 - June 2026

We are saving the forest in Guerrero, Mexico. With wood-saving cooking stoves, we are reducing deforestation and at the same time strengthening a sustainable way of life for the indigenous population.

In the Mexican state of Guerrero, 14 percent of the population belong to indigenous groups (according to INEGI). Living conditions are deteriorating, particularly in the community of Malinaltepec: Excessive deforestation – including for land reclamation for livestock farming – is severely damaging the forests. The consequences are an increased risk of earthquakes and landslides, migration to the cities and a break-up of the village communities.

Our project contributes to the social and ecological resilience of indigenous communities in the face of climate change. The installation of wood-saving cooking stoves reduces the pressure on the forests. Reforestation protects the population from landslides. This is how we are restoring the unique mountain cloud forests of Guerrero.

Project area

Goals

Sustainable management

Develop and implement a plan for sustainable forest management and restoration.

Increase ecological resilience

Increase the social and environmental resilience of indigenous communities in the Sierra de Guerrero to climate impacts.

Resilient development model

Implement a self-determined and ecologically resilient development model in 5 indigenous communities in the agricultural center of Malinaltepec

Improve forest utilization

Improve the ecological sustainability of forest use.

Impacts

Creation of ecological corridors, forest restoration zones and agroforestry mixed cultivation areas in 5 localities.

7 community mediators and 13 members of the Commissariat for Common Goods have been trained in the sustainable use of resources, networked with other stakeholders and actively impart this knowledge to community members.

Introduction of 50 wood-saving cooking stoves, which reduce the cost of firewood by 30 percent and significantly reduce smoke pollution in households.

Establishment of 4 tree nurseries for reforestation at community level and planting of 2,000 seedlings of native tree species.
