Are trees falling for our supply chains? Lidl and other pilot companies have tested this with elan! The portal was developed by OroVerde and Global Nature Fund. Now the self-check is also available for other companies.
Joint press release by Global Nature Fund and OroVerde – the Tropical Forest Foundation
Bonn, Wednesday, January 31, 2024: The EU has declared war on deforestation. The Deforestation Regulation, or EUDR for short, is intended to help. German companies will also have to comply with new rules on the import and export of goods and raw materials from December 30, 2024. Small companies have until June 30, 2025. But what do these rules actually look like? And how can companies check whether they are breaking the law in future and risk high penalties?
Together with the tropical forest foundation OroVerde from Bonn, the Global Nature Fund (GNF) has developed the online portal elan! Four companies tested elan! in a pilot phase:
- Lidl Stiftung & Co KG,
- BioMaderas GmbH/Betterwood,
- Ludwig Weinrich GmbH & Co KG
- Bohnkaf-Kolonial GmbH & Co KG.
elan! was further developed based on feedback from companies and adapted to the needs of users. The beta phase has now also been completed and elan! has been officially launched.
“As Lidl, we are proud to be one of four pilot companies contributing to the upcoming launch of the elan! platform,” says Hannah Mittner, CSR Consultant in Purchasing at Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG.
“We are convinced that elan! is a suitable information tool, especially for small and medium-sized companies, but also for large companies on their way to deforestation-free supply chains. The system already offers good research options and instructions for initial steps to help users develop and implement their own strategies.”
- The portal provides companies with a three-step guide to the complex processes involved in switching to a deforestation-free supply chain.
- As a first step, elan! guides the development of a strategy against deforestation
- In a second step, a risk analysis of the company’s own supply chains is carried out and information is provided on tools, certifications, supply chain traceability and risk raw materials
- The final step is to provide help with monitoring and reporting

Deforestation-free supply chains ensure that no forest ecosystems are destroyed for the cultivation of agricultural commodities and other imported raw materials, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The elan! Portal was developed in the project “Deforestation-free supply chains – Active for more sustainability” and is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection as part of the National Climate Protection Initiative.

For more biodiversity in companies
The Global Nature Fund (GNF) was founded in 1998 as an international foundation for the environment and nature, is independent of the state and pursues exclusively and directly charitable purposes. GNF projects are implemented around the globe with a large number of partner organizations and in various subject areas – water protection, reforestation, development cooperation and many more. In the area of Business & Biodiversity, GNF works closely with companies in Germany and Europe and is actively and effectively committed to integrating more biodiversity into operational processes. This takes place in various projects and collaborations. Together, solutions for sustainable, biodiversity-oriented management are developed.
Tropical forest protection is feasible – we show how it can be done
For more than 30 years, the OroVerde Tropical Forest Foundation has been campaigning for intact tropical forests worldwide. In tropical forest conservation projects, OroVerde combines nature conservation and development cooperation so that forest conservation and sustainable development go hand in hand. Through educational work and knowledge transfer, OroVerde shows what citizens, politicians and businesses can do to protect the rainforests and initiates a change towards a sustainable society. OroVerde also influences political frameworks and legislation for the protection of tropical forests through recommendations for action and campaigns.
