Review of the Sustainable Leadership Journey 2025 in Colombia
More than 50 committed people from over 15 countries met in November for the Sustainable Leadership Journey (SLJ) in Colombia. Trainees, future leaders and multipliers used the week to explore the value of lakes and wetlands, exchange knowledge and strengthen their skills to protect these ecosystems. A special focus was on effective communication for the protection and sustainable use of water bodies.
The SLJ took place as part of our Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project (LLBCP). At the same time, we met with our project partners to discuss how the project’s successes can be expanded and secured in the long term. The close connection between the two formats not only enabled strategic reflection and joint learning. It specifically strengthened regional and thematic networks – an important contribution to the further consolidation of the global Living Lakes network.
“You are in the best position to do something for the environment”
An inspiring start was provided by the opening speech of the SLJ by Brigitte Baptiste (link to the video on LinkedIn). With her visionary perspective on biodiversity, transformation and social change, she set the tone for the entire week.
A particular highlight was our joint excursion to Lago Fúquene (link to the video on LinkedIn). We gained diverse insights into sustainable lake management – from governance issues to local solutions. It became clear how important context-sensitive, participatory action is.
The evenings spent together with Carranga and Bullerengue music, dance and lots of laughter, which created connections across cultural and professional boundaries, will also remain unforgettable. Once again, we were able to experience that international cooperation thrives on trust, diversity and shared experiences.
A big thank you to our friends from Fundación Humedales, who perfectly organized this intensive week with a lot of heart, professionalism and attention to detail.
For me, this week was extremely inspiring – and a great pleasure to be part of a strong international team that is passionately committed to the protection and sustainable use of lakes and wetlands.
