• Protection for the last elephants

Protection for the last elephants

Project period: December 2020 – September 2026
We protect the last Asian elephants. We are creating peace between humans and elephants in the Terai lowlands. In this way, we prevent deadly conflicts.

In the border region between India and Nepal, around 125 elephants live in the human-dominated forest corridors. On their forays, the animals often invade fields and trample the crops of small farmers, causing conflicts. People often react aggressively against the elephants, risking their lives and those of the elephants. In this project, we protect both the population and the elephants through education, improved infrastructure and the creation of alternative sources of income. We use the cross-border coordination between India and Nepal to develop effective solutions and share experiences.

Project area

Goals

The improved infrastructure in the project area protects people from elephant attacks. An early warning system has been set up and houses, fields and the surrounding area are safer.
Local communities get involved in elephant conservation groups with effective, coordinated conflict mitigation strategies at local and transnational levels.
The ecological importance of elephants is well known to local communities, especially the youth. They are well informed about elephant conservation and know how to them avoid conflictseiconflicts and feel properly behavior.
The target group has successfully acquired knowledge about alternative sources of income through cotton processing and uses them to diversify and improve their livelihoods.
