• Insect diversity in the fields

Insect diversity in the fields

Project period: September 2020 - October 2024
We protect insects in the fields. To this end, we develop measures together with land users and implement them in pilot regions across Germany. So that agriculture goes hand in hand with biodiversity conservation in the future.
Three quarters of the world’s food crops depend on pollinators. The number of insect biomass that has been lost in Germany in the past 27 years alone is just as high. The economic consequences are obvious: if the buzzing of bees and co. ceases, our food industry will soon no longer be humming either.

One cause of species extinction is the loss of habitat and one cause of this loss is agriculture. But agriculture can also create habitats – and this project shows exactly how. In seven pilot regions, we are working with our partners to introduce various measures that sustainably promote insects and biodiversity – from flower strips and flowering catch crops to wide rows in cereal fields. We are thus making a contribution to the National Biodiversity Strategy (NBS) and pointing the way to sustainable agriculture that can be transferred to many regions in Europe.
