We fight hunger and create job opportunities. Together with local teams, we plant vegetable gardens in schools and daycare centers in South Africa. The children benefit from a healthier diet and young people receive training in vegetable growing.

In nine rural communities around the Kruger National Park and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, the situation is particularly alarming: the poverty rate here is around 60% and up to 86% of young people are unemployed. Almost half of the population are children. Their nutritional situation is severely threatened by increasingly extreme periods of drought and limited access to water. The meals provided in the educational institutions are often the only meal a day for the children. At the same time, young people lack opportunities for practical training and prospects on the job market.
We help these young people. We ensure the water supply and set up new school gardens and vegetable seedling centers. Here we provide vocational training for young people, while the children in the schools receive healthier food. More than 3,900 children and young people benefit directly from this project.
We are building on the experience of the previous project and systematically expanding it. A video on the “Vegetable gardens against hunger” project in the Welverdiend community in South Africa provides a comprehensive insight:
