The lack of effective wastewater treatment technologies in households and public facilities in poorer communities in rural regions of the Global South leads to a significant deterioration in people’s hygiene and living conditions in the long term. In addition, an unsatisfactory wastewater situation has a negative impact on ecosystem services. The project improves water quality and living conditions through the construction of constructed wetlands. These nature-based solutions are particularly suitable for remote areas without central infrastructure, as they are low-cost and low-maintenance. The filters use locally available plant species, do not require electricity and bind CO₂. Local capacities for operation, maintenance and sustainable use of water resources are strengthened. A transnational exchange promotes the transfer of knowledge on technologies and best practices in ecological wastewater treatment. This best practice is to be incorporated into national wastewater management guidelines.
