Founded in 2009, the Living Lakes Germany network offers environmental and nature conservation organizations from the German lake regions a common platform for cooperation, information exchange and knowledge transfer – regionally and nationwide. The focus is on the development of joint projects, dialog on sustainable solutions and active commitment to the protection of our waters. The Living Lakes Network Germany is part of the international Living Lakes Network, which was founded by the GNF in 1998.
Natural lakes and wetlands, but also artificially created bodies of water such as reservoirs or post-mining landscapes, are among the most valuable and at the same time most threatened habitats in Germany. They are exposed to multiple pressures: Fertilizer and pesticide inputs from agriculture, untreated wastewater, bank obstruction or intensive use. The social and ecological importance of our water bodies has not yet been sufficiently reflected in political protection measures and public debates.
In many regions of Germany, impressive successes have already been achieved in the protection and renaturation of lakes and successful measures have been implemented. This is precisely where the Living Lakes Germany network comes in: It offers a dynamic platform for the intensive exchange of knowledge and experience, strengthens the cooperation of committed players in lake protection and supports the implementation of specific projects.
With the initiative “Living Lake of the Year” initiative initiative, we place a selected body of water in the communicative spotlight every year, drawing attention to its ecological importance, the opportunities for sustainable use and the current challenges of our valuable and fascinating lake landscapes. In this way, we want to raise public awareness of the fascinating diversity and inestimable value of our lake landscapes – and preserve them for future generations.
The Living Lakes Network Germany is closely linked to the international Living Lakes Network, which currently represents over 130 lakes worldwide. Cooperation with European and international partners enables a global exchange of expertise and the joint development of strategies for the protection of lakes and wetlands.
