Since 2004, the Global Nature Fund, together with the Living Lakes Network, has presented the annual “Threatened Lake of the Year” and “Living Lake of the Year” awards to draw attention to the ecological threats to lakes worldwide.
This concept will be developed further in 2025: With the newly introduced “UN Global Lake Day” on August 27, the campaign will be transformed into “Lake of the Year”. In addition to threats, this will bring sustainable use and positive examples of water protection more into focus in future.
Find out more about the lakes that received awards – their stories, challenges and successes in protecting and preserving these important ecosystems.
