1. FC Nürnberg presents sustainable Christmas sweater

Joint press release by the Global Nature Fund and Femnet

2. December 2025
1. FC Nürnberg presents first sustainable Christmas sweater – made from 100% organic cotton and GOTS-certified
  • In cooperation with Fair Wear Works, FC Nürnberg is offering a GOTS-certified Christmas sweater made from 100% organic cotton for the first time.
  • This sustainable fan sweater focuses on durability and is a conscious counter-model to the fast fashion industry.
  • 1. FC Nürnberg is thus setting a sign for the industry and encouraging other sports clubs to switch to sustainable and durable materials in the entire fan shop range.

Bonn, 02.12.2025; 1. FC Nürnberg is setting a strong example for sustainable fan fashion: For the first time, there is a Christmas sweater that is made entirely of organically grown cotton and is GOTS-certified. The sweater is the result of a collaboration with the education and awareness project Fair Wear Works.

A Christmas sweater for true Club hearts
Red, black, ecru – and plenty of Club feeling: The new FCN sweater shows the stadium and club logo and is therefore not only an eye-catcher for the Christmas season, but a real winter companion for fans. The high-quality organic cotton and the fine knit give it the character of a favorite sweater that can be worn “Every year again”.

Celebrate sustainably instead of fast fashion
A study by several environmental organizations shows that classic Christmas sweaters are made to a significant extent of plastic fibers such as acrylic or polyester and are often only worn once or twice before ending up in closets or in the garbage.

The 1. FCN is consciously countering this with a sustainable model:

  • 100% organic cotton instead of synthetic fibers – no microplastic release during washing.
  • GOTS certification – ensures environmentally and socially responsible production along the entire supply chain.
  • Classic, durable design – ensures multiple use over many winters.
  • Durable quality – reduces resource consumption and CO₂ emissions per wearing occasion.

Fair Wear Works: Together for sustainable sports textiles
The sweater is the result of intensive cooperation between 1. FC Nürnberg and Fair Wear Works, a project of the Global Nature Fund and FEMNET e.V., which advises sports clubs on sustainable textile procurement and supports them in the conversion. The aim is to reduce the ecological footprint of the sports textile industry and at the same time raise awareness among fans and clubs.

“1. FCN shows that sustainable fan fashion does not have to be a niche product, but offers an attractive and high-quality alternative,” says Bettina Faust, Project Manager at Fair Wear Works.

Role model for other clubs
Fair Wear Works and 1. FCN would like to set an example with this step: Sustainable fan articles are possible – and popular with fans. We invite sports clubs to follow the example of 1. FCN – not only with Christmas sweaters, but to rely on sustainable and durable materials in the entire fan shop range.

About Fair Wear Works
is a joint project of the Global Nature Fund (GNF) and FEMNET e.V., which accompanies sports clubs, associations and sports facilities on their way to sustainable textile procurement.
The project raises awareness, trains and supports the practical implementation of ecological and social standards in the sports textile industry – and at the same time demonstrates global responsibility in the sense of the development policy education work of the BMZ.

Fair Wear Works is looking for strong players for the extension from 2026.
Our project ends in April 2026, but the commitment to fair and sustainable sports textiles should continue. For this, we need partners who support this path financially and strategically. We invite leagues, associations and clubs: Let us take responsibility together – for more fair play in the supply chain.

Fair Wear Works is funded by ENGAGEMENT GLOBAL gGmbH on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Deutsche Postcode Lotterie and Fairtrade Deutschland.
