Mountain Tara belongs to the Dinarides and it is located in the Western Serbia in encompassing area bounded by the Drina River canyon. The mountain massif consisting of Mt Zvijezda and Mt Tara is karst plateau (1,000 - 1,200 m.a.s.l.) intersected by numerous canyons and gorges. The highest peak is Kozji rid with 1,591 m.
The National Park was declared in 1981 with the total area of 24,991.82 ha (13.35 % core zone). The area has been identified as an Important Plant Area (IPA), Important Bird Area (IBA) and Prime Butterfly Area (PBA).
The National Park Tara is a typical forest area dominantly covered with mixed forests of European Spruce, Silver Fir and European Beech (85 % of forest area) with 1,156 species of vascular flora. From represented 76 plant species are endemic. Special value and importance of the area is Serbian Spruce (Picea omorika), endemic and relict species, which is inhabits canyons and ravines of the middle course of the Drina River.
There are around 60 species of mammals, 140 species of birds, 23 species of amphibians and reptiles and 19 species of fish. This area is inhabited by the most numerous population of brown bears in Serbia. The symbol of fauna of the Tara NP is endemic Pancic's grasshopper (Pyrgomorphulla serbica).
Also, there are numerous archaeological sites and monuments dating from the Neolithic period to modern times. The most important are the Račа Monastery and the necropolis with tombstones – stećci, which are listed for UNESCO World Heritage List.
