The JARO Institute was founded in July 2018 in Berlin as a non-profit association with a clear vision and mission: sustainable action should become the standard for business. To this end, the Institute imparts relevant knowledge, connects people and organizations and works with them to implement the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (Agenda 2030, SDGs).
Knowledge transfer and networking in the field of sustainable procurement are the focus of its activities. Through a large network to buyers and purchasing managers of all company sizes as well as the commitment to the German Association for Supply Chain Management, Procurement and Logistics (BME), JARO aims to specifically network sustainable suppliers with procurement managers. To this end, it initiated the JARO Sustainable Supplier Network in 2019 and held the first JARO B2B Dialogue in 2020, where buyers and suppliers discussed sustainable solutions for their cooperation.
With various lectures and workshops with participants from the business world, JARO contributes to reducing barriers and motivating companies to use sustainable procurement. The JARO Institute provides practical assistance with supporting materials such as the Sustainable Procurement Guide or the SDG-oriented recommendations for sustainable procurement.
JARO has also developed a certification for sustainable procurement organizations for and with the BME, which explicitly considers the entire procurement process of the purchasing company under consideration of ISO 20400. Various companies and institutions have already registered for this since the start at the end of 2019 and are working in a structured manner on their sustainable orientation.
The Global Nature Fund and JARO would like to share their expertise and network to support each other in their sustainability efforts and are planning joint projects to raise awareness of biodiversity issues in purchasing.
