OEKO-TEX® strengthens commitment to protecting biodiversity

OEKO-TEX® is collaborating with the nature conservation organisation Global Nature Fund on the ‘Business for Biodiversity’ project. OEKO-TEX® and Global Nature Fund have analysed biodiversity aspects at the production level and developed specific criteria for OEKO-TEX® STeP production site certification.

Recommendations for biodiversity criteria in ornamental plant production

Ornamental plant production is a global billion-pound industry. However, intensive production poses challenges: in addition to high water consumption, it is primarily pesticides, the loss of natural habitats and high CO₂ emissions from heated greenhouses that have an impact on the environment. New recommendations show ways to achieve more sustainable production. For example, clear standards can specifically promote the protection of biological diversity.

AI in biodiversity monitoring

Until now, experts have been assessing and evaluating the state of biodiversity on agricultural land. In a new project called ‘AI and Citizen Science-based Monitoring of Certified Biodiversity Projects’ – KICS-Zert for short – the Global Nature Fund and the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) are working on a new tool that uses AI to improve or replace biodiversity monitoring by citizens (citizen science).

2,200 hectares for insect protection – recommendations for agriculture, local authorities and companies

The EU LIFE project ‘Insect-friendly regions’ has published its 2025 layman's report, impressively demonstrating how targeted measures at landscape level can advance insect protection and promote biodiversity. Innovative concepts have been implemented over a five-year period in seven model regions in Germany and Italy.

Roadmap for Nature Credits

The European Commission has presented a ‘Roadmap for Nature Credits’ to promote private investment in nature conservation and reward stakeholders, including companies, for ecological measures. Until 30 September 2025, trade associations, companies and other interest groups can contribute to the process as part of a public consultation.
Training for auditors and environmental verifiers on biodiversity

Online training modules focusing on the food industry

The EU directives and regulations on due diligence and reporting obligations that have come into force and are planned are relevant for food companies and also address the field of biodiversity.
The Fit for Biodiversity project partners have developed three virtual training modules that provide a solid basic understanding of the complex requirements in the field of biodiversity in the food industry and prepare participants for competent auditing practice.

Contents of the training series (approx. 2 hours each, including discussion):
  • Module 1: Fundamentals of biodiversity; economic relevance in the food sector; arguments for stronger biodiversity performance
  • Module 2: Legal requirements, materiality, strategy and management
  • Module 3: Biodiversity management in purchasing and supply chains, product design, production, company premises, marketing and communication
Participation in the first training series is free of charge. The number of places is limited to 10 participants. Further information is available from Lake Constance Foundation or Marion Hammerl.
The Fit for Biodiversity project is being implemented by Global Nature Fund, Lake Constance Foundation, Food for Biodiversity e.V., Meo Carbon Solutions GmbH and Justus Liebig University Giessen. Funded by the European Union's LIFE programme, the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) and EDEKA. Guide to forest-based emission credits (in German)

The new guide from Oro Verde – the Tropical Forest Foundation and Global Nature Fund provides a comprehensive overview of the voluntary carbon market, the role of forest projects in climate protection and quality criteria for credible emission credits. The guide addresses current scientific and political developments and shows how companies can meaningfully integrate forest projects into their climate strategy – without replacing the necessary decarbonisation.

Sustainable natural rubber: Fact sheet with recommendations for action (in German)

The Global Nature Fund (GNF) has published a new fact sheet. It shows manufacturing companies concrete ways to make their natural rubber supply chains more sustainable and resilient. Against the backdrop of growing regulatory requirements, ecological risks and global challenges, the paper identifies key risks – and shows how companies can effectively address them.

Software solutions for the EUDR (in German)

Even though the EU regulation on deforestation-free products is likely to be postponed for another year, the issue remains highly relevant for companies. Many companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, face considerable challenges in implementing it. This publication supports companies in selecting suitable software solutions for geodata collection, deforestation risk analysis, supply chain mapping and a complete EUDR solution.
