The project provides information about the value of healthy wetlands and their ecosystem services with the Ramsar Convention as a conceptual framework. To this end, we are implementing a comprehensive communication campaign. Cities and municipalities are also addressed with the “Wetland Cities” concept.

90% of wetlands in Germany have been lost over the past 300 years. 80% of wetlands are in a poor ecological condition today. Yet they play a key role in our environment. We see raising public awareness and acceptance of the need for measures to preserve and sustainably use these ecosystems as an important task. This is exactly what this project is about: it focuses on an important instrument for the protection, conservation and sustainable use of wetlands worldwide – the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
The first step is to inform the general public about the value of healthy wetlands and their great economic, social and cultural importance for our livelihoods (ecosystem services). The Ramsar Convention serves as a conceptual and communicative framework. The second work package deals with the “Wetland Cities” concept, which aims to support cities worldwide in the sustainable development and protection of their wetlands. A traveling exhibition also provides insights into the German Ramsar sites, their challenges, successes and opportunities.
