Dear readers and supporters of the GNF,

The protection of our natural resources knows no boundaries. In this newsletter, we take you to very different places around the world – and show how closely they are connected.

Whether in international marine conservation, the wetlands of the Pantanal or the forests of Central America: everywhere, it is clear how urgent joint action for biodiversity and climate is – and how much impact committed cooperation can have.

This is also reflected in our annual report 2025. In the reporting year, the Global Nature Fund continued to work with many partner organisations worldwide to protect habitats, secure water resources, and promote sustainable development. Whether in the mangrove areas of South Asia, the natural regions of Africa, the lakes of South America or in Europe – everywhere it is clear that nature and resource conservation are not only ecologically necessary, but also pay off socially and economically in the long term.

As the year draws to a close, we would like to thank you for your interest, support and trust. We wish you a peaceful holiday season, relaxing days to pause and reflect, and a confident start to the new year. Let us continue to work together in 2026 to protect nature, preserve habitats and shape the future.

With warm regards,

Udo Gattenlöhner & Stefan Hörmann
Managing Directors, Global Nature Fund

NEW: GNF Annual Report 2025

The year 2025 was once again marked by ecological, social and geopolitical problems. But precisely because time is running out to take action on climate change, biodiversity loss and the strain on our natural resources, a positive outlook for the future is more important than ever. The success of our projects motivates and encourages us in this regard.

Historic success for wetlands

At the 2025 IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi, a motion to prioritise wetlands was passed by an overwhelming majority. This decision underscores the central importance of wetlands for climate, water and biodiversity. The motion was submitted by partners of the Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project (LLBCP), which is coordinated by the GNF.

Join us in saving the forest in Mexico

Every morning, the women in Malinaltepec, a remote mountain region in Mexico, bake tortillas – traditionally on wood-fired ovens, for which they need large quantities of valuable oak wood. Together with our partner Cooperación Comunitaria, they have therefore developed the sustainable ‘Juana’ oven. The new oven saves around 50 per cent of firewood and enables the indigenous village communities to keep their traditions alive in a sustainable way. At the same time, reforestation projects protect the region's particularly species-rich mountain cloud forests and the villages from increasingly frequent landslides.

With your donation, even more families can build their own ‘Juana’. In this way, you protect the forests, improve the health of women and children, and promote the self-determination of the community.

News from our projects

Combating climate change in the Pantanal

In the world's largest wetland, we support indigenous communities in restoring their ecosystem. Through reforestation, sustainable sources of income such as honey and native fruits, and educational opportunities, we strengthen biodiversity, climate protection and local livelihoods...

With passion for Living Lakes

How can lakes and wetlands be effectively protected – and how can people be inspired to get involved? At the Sustainable Leadership Journey in Colombia, over 50 committed participants from more than 15 countries came together to work on precisely this issue. It was an intensive week full of learning, exchange, excursions and cultural encounters...

A sustainable Christmas sweater for football fans

German football club 1. FC Nürnberg is sending a strong signal for sustainable fan fashion: for the first time, there is a Christmas sweater made entirely from certified organic cotton and GOTS-certified.
