Science Based Targets for Nature programme for German businesses

The GNF and WWF Germany support German companies in understanding their impact on nature, setting science-based targets, and adapting their business models for the future. The programme is open to 15 German companies. Expressions of interest can be submitted from now until 15 May 2026.

Biodiversity in the cultivation of bananas and pineapples

Since 2018, the GNF has been working alongside GIZ to promote more sustainable banana and pineapple production in Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. The “From Farm to Fork” project is now entering its next phase: in collaboration with Food for Biodiversity, the focus until mid-2027 will be increasingly on innovative financing mechanisms for measures that promote biodiversity. At the same time, another key issue is coming into focus: the more responsible use of pesticides.

Biodiversity in textile standards

How can voluntary standards help to protect biodiversity more effectively? A new publication from the ‘Unternehmen Biologische Vielfalt – UBi’ project focuses on plant fibres. The “Easy Guide: Biodiversity Criteria in Standards for the Textile and Clothing Industry” was developed by Global Nature Fund and Lake Constance Foundation. It identifies specific areas where existing systems can be further developed and made more effective.

Call for action on the future of agriculture

Fairtrade Germany, GNF and other partners are calling on Federal Minister for Agriculture Alois Rainer to take decisive action to ensure that all trading partners pay fair, cost-covering prices throughout the entire supply chain. Fair prices mean that they cover the costs of sustainable production, thereby enabling livelihoods and investment. The payment of unfair prices must be included in the Directive on Unfair Trading Practices (UTP).

Sustainable natural rubber supply chains

Natural rubber is found in over 50,000 products. Given the rising global demand, sustainable farming methods are becoming increasingly important in order to protect the rainforests and safeguard the livelihoods of over six million smallholders. Global Nature Fund presents innovative approaches that companies can implement in their supply chains.
Biodiversity Finance Assessment

Overview of the financial landscape and stakeholder mapping

As part of the Fit for Biodiversity project (Biodiversity Governance and Performance in the Food Sector), Meo Carbon Solutions is currently conducting an assessment of biodiversity conservation financing. A particular focus is on biodiversity credits.

The preliminary report “Finance Landscape Overview and Stakeholder Mapping” was produced as a building block for the overall assessment. It provides a structured overview of the global landscape of biodiversity finance, focusing on the scale, composition and distribution of financial flows relevant to the conservation and restoration of biodiversity.
The report identifies governments, multilateral development banks, financial institutions, businesses, non-governmental organisations, indigenous and local communities, and international initiatives as key stakeholders. In addition to public funding, the report also examines emerging private financing channels such as biodiversity offsets, sustainable supply chains, impact investments and philanthropy. The report highlights that significantly more investment is currently flowing into environmentally harmful activities than into those that promote the environment.

Finally, the report proposes core indicators and an expanded framework to improve traceability and accountability in biodiversity financing. Future research will further deepen the analysis of market and financing gaps.

IPBES Business & Biodiversity Assessment

With their ‘Business & Biodiversity Assessment’, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) presents a comprehensive scientific assessment of the interactions between the economy and biodiversity. Once again, it is clear that all economic activities depend on nature and its ecosystem functions. A summary for policymakers is available for download. (Source: UBi – Business and Biodiversity).

UEBT flagship report: Resilience rooted in Nature

The report highlights the importance of incorporating biodiversity into responsible sourcing strategies. It is an effective tool for strengthening adaptation to climate change, securing supply chains for plant-based raw materials, and enabling buyers to advance their climate and nature conservation goals. The report supports companies in rethinking their approach to sourcing plant-based raw materials and investing in measures that promote climate resilience and security of supply.

Discussion paper: Sectoral Nature-Positive Transition Pathways

Sectoral nature-positive transition pathways (NPPs) are sector-specific plans designed to identify impacts on nature, set milestones for change, and align economic activities with national biodiversity targets. For businesses, they offer investment certainty and support risk management. The paper was co-authored by Business for Nature, Finance for Biodiversity, the Green Finance Institute, The Nature Conservancy and the WWF.

Nature Tools Compass

The UNEP-WCMC, in collaboration with partner organisations from the ‘Strengthening Understanding and Strategies of Business to Assess and Integrate Nature’ (SUSTAIN) project, has launched the ‘Nature Tools Compass’. It helps companies and financial institutions navigate the jungle of tools available for assessing their dependencies on nature, their impacts, risks and opportunities. It provides an overview of more than 70 tools, as well as recommendations on how to use them.

Report: Finance for Nature

The UNEP report “State of Finance for Nature 2026: Nature in the Red: Powering the Trillion Dollar Nature Transition Economy” shows that we are falling far short of our targets when it comes to investing in nature to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. The report introduces the “Nature Transition X-Curve”, a practical framework designed to help governments and businesses phase out harmful subsidies and destructive investments whilst scaling up highly effective nature-based solutions (NbS) across all economic sectors.
